Video Transcript:
Hello, in this video I will explain how to optimise content on your website for better search rankings. So this company, Creative Gardens and Driveways, are based in Cheshire and they’re a high end Garden Design and Landscaping company. Let’s have a look at the Garden Design page because that’s one of the key ones on their site.
We’re targeting Garden Design on this page, and really on each page of a website we’re only going to target one main search term. We’re not going to try to target Garden Design, Outdoor Kitchens, Garden Rooms, and all kinds of different things on one page. We’re going to have a page for each and you can see the way that’s done here.
Then within that we will probably target some lower ranked keywords. So within garden design, we’ll be targeting 3D design and so on. So for this page here the main keyword is Garden Design. There’s a few places where we’re focusing on that, so we’re indicating to Google that Garden Design is what this page is all about and therefore it should be ranking well for people searching for it.
Optimising the Page Title
First up is the title of the page – it’s called a meta title in the code and is shown here at the top if you hover over the tab with your mouse. So here we’ve got Garden Design, 3D Garden Design, Landscape Garden and Cheshire.
We’ve got a few other locations as well after that, but we’ve got the keywords in the first couple of lines there. The page URL is Garden Design here. The H1 heading, which is the main title of the page itself, is Garden Design. Then throughout the text, we’ve got subheadings and we’ve got text also related to Garden Design – for example Garden Designers, Garden Designers in Cheshire and so on.
We’ve got lots of text in there mentioning garden design but we’re also careful not to overdo it. We don’t want to have a list of spam words or just listing garden design locations one after another. Instead we’ve tried to incorporate it naturally within the text so it reads well, because obviously as well as working well for search results we need this to work well for people that come to the site.
Optimising Images
The images used are also named with keywords relating to Garden Design. On this page we have a gallery and in the gallery all of the images used are named Garden Design too. So from Google’s perspective it’s very clear that this page is all about Garden Design. If someone is searching for Garden Design and they’re in the Cheshire area, then this site is clearly ideal for that.
We have other pages on the website, in the blog and elsewhere, that link back to this page as well with the link Garden Design coming back to it. So it’s very clear that this page should rank really well for search results.
Including videos for Search Engine Optimisation
There are also a number of videos on here too. There’s two sides to why we do that:
One is from a sales point of view and persuading potential customers to contact the company. It tells them a bit more about what the company does and how they work and so on, but also from a search ranking perspective it means people are on the page for longer and Google tracks how long people are on pages in Google’s Chrome browser. The moment someone clicks on a video, they’ll spend a bit of time watching that video and therefore spend longer on the page, so it’s helping search ranking there as well.
All those different factors are coming together to focus Google’s attention on this page and say ‘This is a great page about garden design.’
If someone’s searching for it, then it will show up high in the search results because it will answer most of their questions. The best way to set up a website is to have a page for each of the key services and do it in the same way. So if it’s landscaping, driveways or paving, set up your optimisation in a similar way and make sure there’s enough text for it to be of a level of detail that Google will rank it highly.
We noticed that pages that have less than 600 or 700 words of text just don’t really rank as much. It needs to have a lot of text on there to show up highly in search results.
